No matter how many years pass, within the first few notes of that old song, it all comes back. Those memories faded by time—like a good pair of jeans—come alive, and I’m right back there. So real I can smell it.
When I play, I feel completely free; I disappear, and I’m just a part of the music. There’s no way I would ever wear something that pulls me out of that. It’s gotta flow with me into that comfortable groove, not nag me back to reality.
My guitar comes with me every day, just like my Kato jeans. They are a part of who I am. It’s not a routine, it’s a rhythm. Both get better with age. The tone gets richer with every gig, every scuff. I like to think I get better, too.
Music is just like life. Every experience adds another layer. Sometimes life has a way of poking holes in you, revealing the layer underneath. It all adds up to character. It’s not about being perfect; it's about being real. That's why people listen. It’s what gets them to take a second look. My clothes need to reflect that.
I’m not trying to be someone else. I’m not trying to prove anything. I seek out the authentic, and I instantly recognize it when I find it. It puts me at ease. When I am relaxed and comfortable, the music just flows out of me, as if it came from somewhere else. I wrote some of my best songs wearing these jeans, and I know there are many more to come.
